Garden to Cup: What It Really Means at 1950 Origins

Garden to Cup: What It Really Means at 1950 Origins

What does "garden to cup" really mean?

It's a phrase you'll see on a lot of tea packaging these days, often without much behind it. For us, at 1950 Origins, garden to cup means something very specific: knowing the journey of the tea from the bush onwards, at every single stage, for every single batch.

Two of our teas make that idea easiest to explain : Ananda Classic and Golden Dusk. Both come from the same garden, both go through our own hands and both end up telling very different stories in the cup.

Where it all begins: Ananda Tea Estate

Both Ananda Classic and Golden Dusk are grown at Ananda Tea Estate in North Lakhimpur, Assam, the garden that has been part of our family's tea-growing legacy since 1950. It's grown, plucked, processed and packed under our own supervision, on our own land.

That continuity, the same family, the same estate, the same standards, decade after decade, is really the foundation of what "garden to cup" means to us.

The Journey, Stage By Stage

Here's what that journey looks like in practice:

  • The nursery : Our plants are raised in our own nursery, right from the earliest stage, so we control the quality of the bush from day one.

  • Year-round bush maintenance : The bushes are looked after through every season of the year, covering soil health, drainage, nutrition and pruning. None of this is seasonal or occasional. It's a continuous process that shapes the quality of the leaf long before it's ever plucked.

  • Disciplined plucking : Leaves are plucked on strict six-day rounds. This regularity matters enormously in tea. It determines the tenderness of the leaf and, in turn, the character of the final cup.

  • On-estate manufacture and sorting : The tea is manufactured and sorted right at the estate, rather than being sent elsewhere for processing. This keeps the leaf close to its source through every transformation, from fresh pluck to finished tea.

  • Daily tasting : And every single day during the season, we taste the teas being produced. Only after this tasting and selection process do the best lots go on to become part of a 1950 Origins pack.

Why this level of involvement matters

For us, this hands-on approach exists because it directly shapes how the tea tastes. It gives us greater control, traceability and understanding of the tea at every stage. We know exactly which bushes a batch came from, exactly how it was plucked and processed, and exactly how it tastes before it ever reaches a customer. It's a level of accountability we've built our process around, and one we're proud to offer.

One garden, one season, two very different teas

Here's what makes this particularly interesting: Ananda Classic and Golden Dusk are both selected from Assam's peak second-flush season, widely considered the best time of year for Assam tea, known for producing leaves with real depth and character. Both come from the same garden. And yet, they are made to be completely different experiences.

Ananda Classic

Ananda Classic is a bold, full-bodied CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) tea with a deep, malty character. It's made to hold its own with milk and deliver a strong, comforting cup of chai, the kind of tea that's built for an everyday cup, brewed strong and shared over conversation.

Golden Dusk

Golden Dusk takes the same garden in an entirely different direction. It's an orthodox tea, made from the P126 clone, which is particularly well suited to orthodox manufacture. The process involves fine plucking and careful production, giving Golden Dusk its signature golden tipped leaves, mellow body and more nuanced flavour, a tea meant to be savoured slowly rather than fortified with milk.

Garden to cup, as we see it

For us, garden to cup is about understanding the tea from how it is grown to how it tastes and bringing the best of what our garden produces to your cup. It's a promise we can make because we're involved at every single step.
